Problem

Lendio made the decision to develop a new mobile app, since a large number of small business owners conduct their work on mobile devices. They previously had a web-based invoicing solution, which had gained significant adoption and it was clear that they needed to integrate this feature into the new mobile app.

Solution

Build a mobile app that will provide small business owners a convenient way to generate invoices and collect payments on the go.

To accomplish this quickly, Lendio leadership decided to build a new mobile app in 3 months

Competitive Analysis

I conducted competitive analysis by examining invoicing and financial apps. Additionally, I leveraged my prior experience and research working with the web based invoicing software.

Wireframe user test

I created wireframe designs for the invoicing process and conducted a usability test with small business owners who use invoicing software. I wanted to design the simplest experience possible, while still delivering what our invoicing users need.

    Findings

Based of the user feedback we found:
    • Users who sell services thought the label "Products" should be changed to fit their business. We asked them what a better label would be and most said "Items".
    • Users wanted to see a indication if an invoice has been viewed by a customer.
    • When searching for customers, the first and last name of a customer is more important than a business name. So I made the first and last name prominent on the customer list.
    • Users wanted to create a message on the invoice for their customers to see, so I added a message area at the bottom of the invoice creation screen.

Users felt the invoice number did not need to be so prominent and the invoice total. They also said it was really hard to read.

I redesigned the hierarchy of the invoice preview screen to better fit what users are looking for. I also blocked it out into sections to make it easier to scan.

    Next Steps

Our goal is to have 175 active invoice users by June, 2023, so we will be monitoring to see if we're on the right path. We'll also be doing continuous discovery research with users to learn how to improve our experience in any way.
